I live in Hong Kong now. I left my apartment and life in New York and took two suitcases and a duffle bag with me. (I got a grant to work here for a year.)
About two weeks before I left, when I was home taking stock of all the things in my apartment I don’t [...]

One of the New York Times’ new local blogs linked to my last post and I feel excited and totally strange about this. Perhaps it will make me post more often and remember that what I say is in the public sphere. And I’ve been wanting to get in contact with the editor of that [...]

I need some good comebacks. I love Brooklyn and I love my neighborhood, but recently I’ve run into some icky situations that have made me want to completely stop being friendly. First, the creepy guy with the gold grill who works at the supermarket tried to hug and kiss me. I’ve always just said hi [...]

The Times wrote a story about Tehching Hsieh recently, and now I’ve decided i must find him. He lives in Clinton Hill! And he has an incredible story. Considering how few Asians live in the neighborhood, I’m hoping I’ll spot him one day.
In the meantime, I should make my way to the Guggenheim for [...]

Apparently someone named Jimmy Choi used to live in my building. It’s unclear which apartment he lived in because his gas bill never specifies an apartment. It made me laugh. I was on my way back from my third karaoke excursion in a week. I’ve been feeling so Chinese!

I like it when people [...]

Polite smile.

13Mar08

There have been a couple instances recently where I’ve employed my polite, non-committal, hoping-to-end-the-conversation smile. Sometimes there’s really no other way I can think to respond.
At an East Village bar last Friday, I had the following exchange with a friend of a friend:
FoaF: So what’s your ethnicity?
Me: I’m Chinese.
FoaF: [pauses, considers] I spent a year [...]

On Fulton near Washington, I was walking toward two guys who were walking towards me and chatting. As I was about to pass them, the guy closest to me, who presumably had just made a point to his friend, looked at me and said, “Right, China girl?”
I smiled and kept walking. He meant to be [...]
