It was a bizarre June. Sorry I’ve been silent. But here’s a quick plug for some stuff worth checking out.
I’d heard about the Museum of Chinese in America but had never visited. I plan to check it out in the next few weeks and am even more excited that it has gotten a state-of-the-art makeover [...]

Sex theme park is a no-go.
I was tempted to title this post “Holy guacamole! Aiya!” because that’s how I felt upon seeing the image and accompanying text for this article in the NYTimes. It seems that plans for a sex-themed park got under way in Chongqing, but then got nixed by local authorities. Some snippets from the article:
Photographs on the [...]

Jackie Chan opens can of worms.
There’s a lively discussion going on at the “Room for Debate” blog at the New York Times. I’d heard about Jackie Chan’s remarks, but the issues brought up in the comments to this blog post provided so many different perspectives that I thought I should post them here. From questioning whether Jackie Chan was mistranslated [...]

Self-conscious interlude.
One of the New York Times’ new local blogs linked to my last post and I feel excited and totally strange about this. Perhaps it will make me post more often and remember that what I say is in the public sphere. And I’ve been wanting to get in contact with the editor of that [...]

So they knew about the milk all along. From the NY Times:
One of China’s biggest dairy producers received consumer complaints about its baby milk formula as early as December 2007 — much earlier than previously thought and nine months before the producer ordered a nationwide recall because of concerns that the formula had been adulterated [...]

Guilty pleasure.
I’m really excited about the Sex and the City movie and feel a bit embarrassed about it. It’s partly because the show is so unrealistic about living in New York and also because I feel strange relating so much to a show that is absolutely not targeted towards me, a 20-something Asian female. Perhaps it’s [...]

Shut up, Sharon Stone.
At the top of my gmail inbox, a headline from Yahoo! Entertainment keeps popping up like chronic ezcema.
Apparently Sharon Stone ran her mouth off at Cannes suggesting that the horrible Chinese earthquake is some sort of divine retribution.
She said in an interview with a CHINESE news source:
“I’m not happy about the way the Chinese are [...]

The dark future.
My mom thinks that our Iranian friends have probably experienced discrimination recently due to the growing antagonism between their home country and ours. She says that one day we’re going to face the same thing, if China becomes a full-on enemy of the US.
She can be a bit of a downer.
I guess it’s worth thinking [...]

That questionable ad with the Chinese-accented panda couple has been taken off the air after viewers complained. Bye bye, Ling Ling’s Bamboo Furniture Shack.
From the NYTimes article:
Vinod Gupta, the chairman and chief executive of InfoUSA in Omaha, the parent of Salesgenie.com, said in a telephone interview Tuesday that a commercial featuring two animated pandas speaking [...]
